Medicare and Senior Health Insurance Information Program

Extra Help is a Medicare program to help people with limited income and resources pay Medicare prescription drug costs. 

Having trouble paying your prescription drugs?

If you qualify for Extra Help and join a Medicare drug plan, you'll:

  • Get help paying your Medicare drug plan's costs.
  • Have no late enrollment penalty.

You automatically qualify for Extra Help if you have Medicare and meet any of these conditions:

  • You have full Medicaid coverage.
  • You get help from your state Medicaid program paying your Part B premiums (in a Medicare Savings Program).
  • You get Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits.

Drug costs in 2019 for people who qualify for Extra Help will be no more than $3.40 for each generic drug and $8.50 for each brand-name drug.  

If you don't automatically qualify for Extra Help, you can apply anytime:

  • Call SHIIP toll-free at 1-855-408-1212 Monday through Friday from 8am to 5pm and one of our Medicare counselors can assist you.
  • Visit socialsecurity.gov/i1020 to apply online.
  • Call the Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213.  TTY users can call 1-800-325-0778.

Information and Options Counseling

Options Counseling— A decision-support process that includes: listening to expressed preferences, values & needs, talking about options based on needs & preferences,  supporting an individual to make informed choices, connecting the individual to services and following up with the individual.

Money Smart for Older Adults—Kerr-Tar began to promote this program that was developed jointly by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB).The program raises awareness among older adults and their caregivers on how to prevent financial exploitation and encourages advance planning and informed financial decision-making.

 

Legal Aid of North Carolina – Senior Law Project

The Kerr-Tar Area Agency on Aging contracts with Legal Aid of North Carolina’s Senior Law Project  Legal Aid of North Carolina's Senior Law Project to offer legal services. At no cost to the client, civil legal help is available to North Carolinians who are 60 years of age or older. Assistance is available for Life Planning, Housing, Elder Abuse, Consumer, and Benefits.  

Older adults with the greatest social and economic need have priority.

Legal Aid of North Carolina's Senior Legal Helpline can answer general legal questions and offer advice specific to each situation. The lawyers can write letters and make phone calls to help you resolve your problem. In addition, they can review legal documents with you, clarify issues, and provide options. If your situation needs further attention, the Senior Legal Helpline can refer you to a local Legal Aid office or to pro bono attorneys if necessary.
